Neighborhood Roots

We are focused within the South Atlanta neighborhood, a historic urban community. Now under-resourced, it was once a center for education, and our desire is to participate in weaving the beautiful history of her roots with her present-day locale spiritually, socially, and economically.  See map of South Atlanta.

About South Atlanta

The South Atlanta community (originally called Brownsville) is a historic African-American neighborhood. South Atlanta was at one time the mecca of the African American community in Atlanta. The neighborhood was created and designed by Clark University (now Clark Atlanta) and Gammon Theological Seminary. The former college is now the beautiful campus for The New Schools at Carver High. These two historic black educational institutions were forced to relocate to keep their doors open. During segregation, the community building at the top of the neighborhood also served as a movie theater. The exit of a GM Plant was the final straw, and the majority of the homeowners and leaders left. The community center became a liquor store and a hub for drug distribution.

Meanwhile, a group of seniors in the neighborhood prayed for years for their community. When they heard about the work of FCS Urban Ministries, the seniors asked FCS to purchase and rehab the community center, now called the Gateway Building. The Gateway Building is currently a rally point for Community Life Church, The South Atlanta Marketplace, Community Grounds Cafe, The South Atlanta Bike Shop and Metro Merge. South Atlanta is truly an amazing community, and we thank God for the opportunity to learn with and from our neighbors. This place we love is home.
